Art presents an opportunity for us to make sense of our existence, cement our identity and process personal experiences of trauma and grief. Artists with lived experiences of mental health issues, in particular, can find making work about their personal struggles to be incredibly cathartic and a tool for recovery.
But can having an art practice informed by traumatic experiences and distressing subject matter sometimes result in the artist over-identifying with these constructs? Can the emotional labour involved in making such personal work become detrimental to the artist’s wellbeing?
