Ritual [noun]… a set of fixed actions and sometimes words performed regularly, especially as part of a ceremony. For the second installment of the CA Panel series, Critical Animals have invited four artists participating in this year’s festival, artists Caitlin Dempsey, Luna Mrozik Gawler, Genevieve Graham, Blake Lawrence and Justine Walsh to discuss the way in which ‘ritual’ manifests in their work.

 

Panelists:

Caitlin Dempsey
Caitlin Dempsey is an artist and Bachelor of Psychology graduate. Her practice explores the emotional states and psychological constructs she learnt about during her studies.

Holly Farrell
Holly is a Newcastle based cultural producer, curator, and Co-Director of Critical Animals. She has spent the past seven years working within arts institutions and is currently completing her Masters in Curating and Cultural Leadership at UNSWAD, Sydney.

Luna Mrozik Gawler
Luna Mrozik Gawler is a Melbourne writer, multidisciplinary artist and researcher, whose work explores human ecology and the role of Art in addressing climate change.

Genevieve Graham
Genevieve Graham is a photographic installation artist. Through her work she demystifies funerary rituals by using artistic discourse to reconceptualise death.

Blake Lawrence
Blake Lawrence is an experimental photographer and performance-maker from northern NSW. He has exhibited nationally at Firstdraft, Seventh Gallery, C3 Contemporary, The Walls, and Verge Gallery, and has presented performance work in Brisbane’s Spring Hill Reservoirs, and Sydney’s Carriageworks, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Art Gallery of NSW.

Justine Walsh
Justine Walsh is an interdisciplinary performance artist/arts worker based in the Dandenong Ranges. She uses song, text, sound, movement & remnant materials, & values nourishment & ritual.

The Lock-Up is an accessible venue with ramp or steps entrance. Accessible toilet available. Reserved parking is available on the other side of Hunter Street outside Westpac. Note that some areas of the venue have low light, uneven flooring and narrow walkways.
