‘Giving’ is a performance piece that focuses on the emotional labour and subtle mental exhaustion that builds from others placing their own emotional weight on you. ‘Giving’ explores a heaviness and emotional toll that is often carried by those of us who may be susceptible to taking on the emotions of others.
Adamson will be physically conveying this heaviness and emotional distress through this performance by sitting in the middle of the space, wearing a white handmade simple dress. Adamson will then sew rocks onto the dress by placing one rock at a time onto the dress, covering with a white patch of fabric and then sewing the patch on with the rock inside. This will create a subtle heaviness to the garment. By sewing the rocks to the garment whilst wearing the cone, Adamson will be exploring the mental and emotional states that she has been subjected to during the disintegration of a friendship during the past year and the weight that she willingly took on during the manipulation by this person.
