‘Giving’ is a performance piece that focuses on the emotional labour and subtle mental exhaustion that builds from others placing their own emotional weight on you. ‘Giving’ explores a heaviness and emotional toll that is often carried by those of us who may be susceptible to taking on the emotions of others.
Adamson will be physically conveying this heaviness and emotional distress through this performance by sitting in the middle of the space, wearing a white handmade simple dress. Adamson will then sew rocks onto the dress by placing one rock at a time onto the dress, covering with a white patch of fabric and then sewing the patch on with the rock inside. This will create a subtle heaviness to the garment. By using the traditionally feminine craft form of sewing, Adamson is exploring the concept of emotional labour that is most commonly taken on by women.
