Is an image object? In a world saturated by screens its easy to forget that the photograph is a tangible object – something tactile, something with mass, something material. ‘Material Based Photography’ is a culmination of some of the research James Rhodes has undertaken whilst completing his PhD. The presentation will explore some of his research, discussing the way in which the materiality of the photograph is used by artists, and discussed by theorists, and how he uses it in his own practice. In an attempt to understand the complexities of the photographic object, the presentation will map the possibilities of what materiality means for photography by introducing a number of different ways to comprehend the materials context in relation to the photographic image.
