Do you like memes? Do you like powerpoint presentations with transition effects? Do you like thinking about the destabilising impact that the internet has had on our conception of time, success and sustainability, and how this has fundamentally shifted the way we engage with information and each other? Do you also like theatre? [that last one’s not 100% necessary, tbh] Well, have we got the event for you. In a blistering forty-three-minute powerpoint extravaganza, two disgruntled playwrights will take you on a wander through the wonder of the internet and how the emergence of memes—an urgent, organic and ironic form—reflects the way that our values, priorities and preferred forms of communication have shifted in the theatre industry and maybe even beyond our safe little left-wing artsy bubble. The internet has made it possible to instantaneously access overwhelming amounts of information, while also eroding the often-oppressive authoritarian and philosophical structures that once acted as a framework to contain and explain all this information. We explore how this has affected creative practice, how the readily available proliferation of differing ideological viewpoints online contributes to the death of the ‘authored’ text. Exploring dramaturgical concepts through gifs and memes, we are an ouroboros, sustaining our practice by fuelling that which makes us irrelevant. We don’t even know if we’re being sarcastic anymore.
